Project Overview

A $73,000,000 renovation and expansion of Carrier Library at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia added 56,887 square feet of new construction to one of the campus's most prominent academic landmarks. The project preserved and celebrated the library's historic 1939 entrance facing the Centennial Fountain while adding two new grand entrances, including a large-window facade and a welcoming arc entrance facing D-Hall. The renovation and expansion balanced new construction with historic preservation, creating a unified facility that honored the library's campus legacy while significantly expanding its capacity. The client engaged PRESWERX to produce renderings and animations to support the pursuit.

Client Challenges

Pursuing a $73,000,000 library renovation and expansion required the client to show how a major addition would respect a beloved campus landmark rather than overshadow it:

  • Visualizing 56,887 SF of new construction alongside the preserved 1939 entrance facing the Centennial Fountain, in a way that honored the building's historic significance.

  • Communicating how three distinct grand entrances would unify the expanded library as a single, welcoming campus destination.

  • Differentiating the team in a competitive higher education procurement for one of JMU's most prominent academic buildings.

The client needed visuals that captured the ambition of the expansion and the sensitivity of the historic preservation in equal measure.

Scope of Work

PRESWERX produced renderings and animations for the James Madison University Carrier Library renovation and expansion, developing visual assets that brought the completed project to life for the pursuit. Renderings captured the building's three grand entrances, including the new large-window facade, the arc entrance facing D-Hall, and the restored 1939 entrance at the Centennial Fountain, communicating the architectural character and campus presence of the expanded library. Animations conveyed the full scale and design quality of the 56,887-square-foot addition and its relationship to the existing historic building, giving JMU a compelling vision of the finished campus landmark.

PRESWERX Approach

PRESWERX focused on producing visuals that honored both the scale of the new construction and the significance of the historic building it extended. The team addressed three priorities:

  • Rendering the three grand entrances with attention to the architectural character of each and their role in unifying the expanded facility.

  • Capturing the relationship between the new addition and the preserved 1939 historic structure in a way that communicated design continuity.

  • Producing assets calibrated to the expectations of a university owner with strong institutional attachment to the building.

The result was a visual package that made the project's balance of old and new immediately compelling.

Results Delivered

PRESWERX delivered a set of renderings and animations that gave the Carrier Library pursuit a clear, compelling visual identity:

  • Renderings captured the building's three grand entrances and the architectural character of the expanded library, giving JMU a vivid picture of the finished campus landmark.

  • Animations conveyed the scale and design quality of the 56,887 SF addition and its relationship to the existing historic structure.

  • The visual package gave the client a powerful tool for communicating a careful, campus-sensitive expansion to a university owner.

The client went into the pursuit with visuals that accurately reflected the ambition and sensitivity of the project.
